What would you think if I sang out of tune...

1st Inning.
Random Facts About Me...Things I've done since becoming unemployed in August.  Tore out the remaining backyard concrete patio in anticipation of building a wood deck...Dusted, vacuumed, and washed all window blinds in the house...Built a 10'x10' dog pen...Posted my resume on CareerBuilder only to have folks from Farmer's Insurance contact me about opening an office...Almost applied for a Crime Scene Clean-up position...

Conducted a complete ammo inventory by caliber and quantity... Had a beer during the week at lunchtime...Dressed up in head-to-toe camo and tried to sneak around the house without the dogs seeing me...Went about 5 days without showering or shaving to see if anyone would notice and they didn't...

Articles of the Week...

  • PCU-20 Years Later..."'PCU,' the cult classic college film starring Jeremy Piven, Jon Favreau and David Spade is the movie everyone’s seen but no one talks about. That one friend who probably smoked too much dope in college has definitely quoted the movie to you, or you’ve probably watched it on a Sunday afternoon while nursing a hangover."  If Nostradamus was a modern-day screenwriter he would have penned the script for the movie 'PCU'.
  • Frogs Vs Grunts..."There’s an on-going debate on who’s tougher: a Navy SEAL or a member of the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment’s Delta Unit, a.k.a. “Delta Force.” Both are elite, super soldiers held in the highest regard for their specially-trained combat skills and endurance on and off the battlefield; they are the best of the best of the best of the military branches that they are operated by. But which one is the better badass?" Chuck Norris vs Steven Seagal...hmmm.
  • Show Me The Car Keys..."Imagine owning the most popular automaker in the United States. Now imagine a special interest group eliminating your ability to serve over 10 million Americans unless you did business with their unique cartel."  I keep seeing articles about Tesla and the dealers from other automakers squashing any attempt by Tesla to get into the market.  Can you say Auto Mafia?
  • Arnold & Cooper Reunite.."The hit sitcom “The Wonder Years” loved to look back -- and for the first time in 16 years, the cast reunited to reminisce about the iconic show. “We were so little and so young and it was such a big part of our life. It was half our life at that time, you know?” Fred Savage, who starred as Kevin Arnold, said. The show was set in the tumult of the 1960s and featured nostalgic narration by Daniel Stern as the voice of a grown-up Kevin." I'll be ordering the boxed set.  Will you?
  • Hey, Look It's A Hole..."An urgent expedition will leave tomorrow to probe a giant crater that has appeared in gas-rich northern Siberia. Extraordinary aerial images show a mysterious hole which experts say may be up to 262 feet wide, in the Yamal Peninsula of northern Russia.
'A scientific team has been sent to investigate the hole and is due to arrive at the scene on Wednesday,' The Siberian Times has reported."
For a little of the bizarre and mysterious on this planet...
  • Soccer Fans Unite..."Fans of the Maccabi Haifa soccer club are known for their unbending loyalty and for getting a tad emotional when cheering on their team, ranked one of the top in Israel. When they heard that one of their own, Texas-raised Israeli military First Sgt. Nissim Sean Carmeli, was killed in Gaza over the weekend and had few to escort his body to its final resting spot, they took to Facebook to beg others to attend his funeral in the northern Israeli city."  A great little story that didn't get much traction.  Humanity has some hope.
  • Time To Phone Home..."'Just imagine the moment, when we find potential signatures of life.Imagine the moment when the world wakes up and the human race realizes that its long loneliness in time and space may be over — the possibility we’re no longer alone in the universe,' said Matt Mountain, director and Webb telescope scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, which plans to launch the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018."  To infinity and beyond!
  • Hypocrisy-Table For Two..."NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and at the turn of the century, Booker T. Washington had a three-pronged agenda for their advancement: education, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. Those three values completely align with conservative principles. At the NAACP conference this week, a member was quite upset that black conservatives were there at all, including Deneen Borelli and CL Bryant, and made it clear they were not welcome at the event."  Personal Pet Peeve--hypocrisy...oh and ignorance which can both be found in this one.
  • Spies Don't Like Fries..."Thanks to MuckRock, Americans now know what problems CIA employees must endure daily … in their cafeterias. The website published on Monday a series of emails sent to complain about the CIA’s cafeterias. The results are exactly as petty and passive-aggressive as you’d expect."  Hilarious!  What if we all had suggestion boxes?  Oh, the fun we could have...

Cool Videos...

I was just getting out of my comic book collecting days when Spawn hit the news stands but Todd McFarlane's creation was the next big thing in comics at that time and it turned the tables on the big two publishers (DC and Marvel) when Image Comics started releasing Spawn and their other titles. There was the film and the HBO animated series which did okay but a sequel would sure be nice. This fan-film I saw over at JOBLO.com is a nice touch on what a sequel could be.  Enjoy!

I have always been a fan of Batman and the characters in his universe.  With the upcoming Batman v Superman movie and rumors of some of those supporting characters appearing in it, including Nightwing, I was excited to see this fan-film trailer (and coming soon web series) on JOBLO.com. Enjoy!

Firearms Corner...Filling out the 4473.  A couple of months ago, The Truth About Guns posted an article discussing the joy of filling out the Form 4473, which for the laymen is the background check form completed in order to purchase a firearm from a Federal Firearms Licensed dealer.  As a Federal Firearms Licensed dealer, I have first-hand knowledge of this form and the issues that can arise when a customer fills it out.  For a pretty straight forward form, folks seem to always overlook or not read clearly what information the form requires. I blame it on nerves as I believe most folks are afraid of messing something up on the form so they misread the question.  Well, the fellas over at the Military Arms Channel on YouTube put together a great video that provides some really good information on the Form 4473. Enjoy!

American Civics Lesson...Electoral College.  Although this is not a Presidential election year, prospective candidates are starting to garner support as they feel the waters before jumping in officially.  One question I get from a friend or family member each Presidential election cycle usually revolves around the Electoral College and why do we have it or how does it work.  Some people say it favors large states while others (including me) say it protects the smaller states.  Well, I found a great little video on YouTube that explains the process and details around the Electoral College. Enjoy!

Sports...Kansas City Royals and Sung Woo Lee.  As you may know from reading this blog, I am a huge Kansas City Royals fan and have been since I was a wee little kid growing up in one of the many suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri.  Well, this past August (when the Royals got super hot), another Royals fan made a trip from his home from halfway around the world in South Korea to Kansas City to watch his first Royals' games in person.  That 'Super-Fan' was Sung Woo Lee.

Per KMBC.com, "Since he arrived in Kansas City last week, his visit has been covered extensively as he toured Kauffman Stadium, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Boulevard Brewery and got his first taste of Kansas City barbecue.  Lee had the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at Royals games not once, but twice."  While in KC, Lee was all over the place.  He was on tv...he was on radio...he was at Kauffman Stadium.  I was very proud as a Royals fan to see the community embrace this young man and his love of the Kansas City Royals.

Now as the season has ended and the Royals are in the playoffs (Playoffs?!?!) for the first time in 29 years, I really, really, really want Sung Woo Lee to return and bring some of his magic back to KC. For more on Sung Woo Lee's 'KC Adventure' check out this blog post by Rany on the Royals.

Movie I Want To See...InterStellar.  A movie coming out this November is 'Interstellar' starring Matthew McConaughey and a cast full of Hollywood stars (to include Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, and Jessica Chastain) and directed by Christopher Nolan.  The plot per Wikipedia, "When a wormhole (which theoretically can connect widely-separated regions of spacetime) is discovered, explorers and scientists unite to embark on a voyage through it, transcending the limits of human space travel. Among the travelers is a widowed engineer (McConaughey) who has to decide to leave behind his two children to join the voyage with the goal of saving humanity."

Since I have a man-crush on Matthew you can definitely count on me seeing this one.  I have also been impressed with Christopher Nolan's work (see the Batman Trilogy) and I look forward to his take on the space adventure genre.  As a kid I remember watching 2001: A Space Odyssey (along with the sequel) and Disney's Black Hole, and many of the space adventure movies from the '80s/'90s and this will surely fall into that category of 'Jeremy's Favorites'. The trailer shows some amazing views of space and other worlds, as well as the drama that has lead to Matthew needing to leave Earth with his crew to find humanity's hope for continued existence.  On a serious note--the world's population continues to grow while this planet stays the same size.  I firmly believe that in my lifetime we will run out of food/fresh water at some point and will need to do exactly what McConaughey is sent to do...hopefully we find a wormhole or someone will invent faster-than-light travel.  We are explorers by nature and it's time to start exploring the Universe.

The Interstellar trailer is below.  Enjoy!

FFL Factoid...From the National Shooting Sports Foundation's ATF Q&A page:

Q: If a customer innocently answers a question on the 4473 form incorrectly or omits an entry and the licensee notices the error after the transfer, what is the correct procedure to rectify the error?

A: If the licensee discovers that a Firearms Transaction Record, ATF Form 4473, is incomplete or improperly completed after the firearms have been transferred, the licensee should photocopy the inaccurate form. The buyer should return to the store and make changes to errors or omissions in Sections A and/or C on the copy and date and initial it. In cases where the licensee made an error or omission to sections B and/or D the person who made the errors should make the changes and should initial and date them. The corrected photocopy should be attached to the original ATF F 4473 and retained as part of the licensee’s permanent records

Baseball Video..."Once when the Yankee's Lou Pinella was batting he questioned a Palermo strike call. Pinella demanded, 'Where was that pitch at?' Palermo told him that a man wearing Yankee pinstripes in front of 30,000 people should not end a sentence with a preposition. So Pinella, no dummy, said, 'OK, where was that pitch at, asshole?' "--George Will
